Mexican lawmakers are preparing to discuss a proposal that aims to improve the working conditions for app-based workers, such as drivers and couriers for companies like Uber, Didi, and Rappi.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has submitted a reform to the labor law that would require these workers to receive a minimum wage aligned with the national minimum wage, regardless of fluctuations in service demand.
The proposed legislation also mandates that companies register their employees and provide essential social security benefits, including health services, work risk insurance, and retirement savings plans.
The reform has been sent to the labor committee of the Lower House and is expected to be debated in Congress soon, potentially bringing about a change in labor rights for gig economy workers in Mexico.
