Rents in Switzerland saw a slight decrease of 0.3% in October compared to September, according to an index from Homegate in collaboration with Zurich Cantonal Bank. This decline specifically applies to new or re-rented apartments, while year-over-year figures show a strong increase of 3.2%.
The regions of Zug, Glarus, and Geneva reported the largest monthly drops at 2.2%, 1.3%, and 1.0% respectively. Other notable declines were observed in Ticino (-0.6%) and Zurich (-0.7%). On the other hand, Graubünden experienced a monthly increase of 1.0%. Over the past year, almost all of Switzerland"s 25 cantons recorded growth, with Schwyz leading at 11.0%, followed by Zug at 7.4% and Basel-Stadt at 6.4%. Neuchâtel was the only canton to show a slight decrease of 0.1%.
In major Swiss cities, Lugano saw a minor monthly decline of 0.1%, but reported a yearly increase of 6.0%. Lucerne and Basel recorded more significant annual gains of 7.2% and 6.2% respectively. Other cities such as St. Gallen, Zurich, Lausanne, Bern, and Geneva also showed positive growth, ranging from 1.9% to 5.6%. The survey did not include Chur in the analysis of agglomerations.
