A painting by surrealist artist René Magritte has achieved a record-breaking sale at Christie’s in New York, marking the highest auction price for the artist to date. This sale also stands as the most significant lot of the current New York November sales season.
The painting was backed by a third-party guarantee, ensuring a minimum sale price while allowing the guarantor to benefit from any additional bidding above that threshold. Previously, Magritte"s auction record was set in March 2022 at Sotheby’s in London, where a smaller piece from the same L’empire des lumières series sold for a significant amount.
