Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, a major US insurance company, was fatally shot outside a hotel in New York City. The shooting occurred during the company's investor day event and appears to have been a targeted attack.

Witnesses say the assailant waited for Thompson and shot him from a close distance. Thompson, 50, was taken to a local hospital but did not survive his injuries. The suspected shooter fled on foot.
