peru ex president toledo sentenced to 20 years for corruption scandal

Alejandro Toledo, the former President of Peru, has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for corruption and money laundering. This is in connection to a bribery scandal involving the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

It was found that Toledo accepted a bribe of $35 million in 2005 in exchange for awarding Odebrecht a contract to construct a section of the Interoceanica highway. The cost of the project ended up being $2.1 billion, significantly higher than the initial estimate of $850 million.

Toledo, who served as president from 2001 to 2006, surrendered to authorities in the United States last year and was later extradited to Peru. The Odebrecht scandal is considered one of the largest corruption cases in Latin America, with the company allegedly paying approximately $785 million in bribes across twelve countries, resulting in inflated costs for various construction projects.
