Michael McGrath, who resigned as Ireland's finance minister in June, is expected to become the next European Union justice chief.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has endorsed McGrath, emphasizing his extensive experience in economic and financial policy.

McGrath is anticipated to lead initiatives such as the European Democracy Shield and act as a watchdog for the rule of law, particularly in relation to countries like Hungary.

McGrath, a member of the centrist Fianna Fáil party, was first elected to the Irish parliament in 2007. He has held various governmental roles, including minister for public expenditure and reform, before taking on the finance portfolio in 2022.

Known for his cautious political style, McGrath will also oversee consumer and data protection regulations, ensuring their relevance in the digital age.

Additionally, he will work towards implementing a new media freedom rulebook.
