Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot in Manhattan this morning. The incident occurred in front of the Hilton hotel at around 6:45 a.m. where the company was planning to hold its Investor Day, which has now been canceled.
Local media reports suggest that the shooting was a deliberate attack, with Thompson sustaining gunshot wounds to his chest and leg. He was discovered unconscious at the scene and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspect, described as a white male wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and a gray backpack, is currently being sought by authorities. It is believed that the assailant used a firearm equipped with a silencer. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, as no witnesses from nearby vendors or hotel staff observed the shooting.
Thompson, who had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004, specializing in mergers, acquisitions, and government programs, assumed the role of CEO in 2021.
