Meta is planning a major infrastructure project to build a global subsea cable. The project is estimated to cost over $10 billion and will cover a distance of more than 40,000 kilometers.
The goal of this initiative is to improve Meta's ability to handle its increasing global data traffic, which currently represents a significant portion of internet usage worldwide. The proposed cable route will connect the U.S. east coast to India via South Africa, and then loop back to the U.S. west coast through Australia, forming a "W" shape.
Although the project is still in its early stages and no physical construction has begun, it is expected to be officially announced in early 2025, providing more details about the cable's route, capacity, and strategic importance. This initiative demonstrates Meta's commitment to strengthening its infrastructure in response to the growing demands driven by investments in artificial intelligence and expanding user engagement across its platforms.
