A recent survey conducted by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation has revealed that Swiss households are experiencing increasing financial strain. According to the survey, one-third of respondents described their financial situation as "difficult," which is a notable increase from the previous year.
The survey also found that 35% of respondents indicated that their circumstances are burdensome, up four percentage points from before. Additionally, nearly half of those surveyed expressed some level of concern about their household budgets, while only 18% reported having no worries at all.
The financial challenges are particularly pronounced in the Italian-speaking region, where 59% of respondents characterized their situation as "very or rather very difficult." The survey also highlighted a significant public sentiment regarding wealth inequality, with 44.38% of Swiss citizens believing that the gap between the rich and poor is excessive. Furthermore, 41.73% of respondents advocated for heavier taxation on wealth.
This economic climate may have political implications, as evidenced by recent setbacks for the centre-right majority in parliament, particularly in relation to the referendum on the old-age and survivors’ pension payment.
