The upcoming Trump administration intends to reverse the more stringent fuel-efficiency standards implemented during the Biden administration. These regulations aim to promote the production of electric vehicles (EVs).
Sources close to Trump"s transition team suggest that this action aligns with a campaign promise to eliminate what has been referred to as the "EV mandate," despite the absence of a formal mandate. The regulations established by the Biden administration require automakers to manufacture at least 35% of their vehicles as electric by 2032, while also encouraging a gradual phase-out of fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
The Trump administration plans to weaken these standards, which were finalized earlier this year by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. Formal directives to reconsider these regulations are expected to be issued in the near future.
