The U.S. has allocated a significant aid package of $988 million for Ukraine to enhance its defense against Russia's ongoing invasion. This funding will reduce the available amount of $2.21 billion in the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, as the Biden administration focuses on purchasing weapons from the defense industry instead of depleting U.S. military stocks.
The aid package includes ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) produced by Lockheed Martin, as well as drones and spare parts for artillery maintenance. This announcement coincides with the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in California, where defense industry leaders and policymakers are gathering. The Biden administration continues to utilize Presidential Drawdown Authority, which allows for the transfer of excess military resources during emergencies without congressional approval.
Additionally, approximately $6 billion in congressionally granted authority is maintained for future military support to Ukraine. Since the conflict began in February 2022, the U.S. has provided over $62 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.
