ING Bank Luxembourg loses majority of customers amid strategic shift

ING Bank in Luxembourg has experienced a notable decrease in its customer base, with around 86,000 clients remaining as of early 2024, down from a total of 124,000. This decline is a result of the bank's decision to divest its over-the-counter business and focus on serving high net worth individuals and corporate clients.

As a result of this strategy, many customers with basic banking needs have closed their accounts. Currently, there are only 18,000 customers with simple everyday banking products remaining, and a significant number of them are transitioning to BGL BNP Paribas. The whereabouts of the remaining 80 percent of former customers are unknown, as other local banks have not disclosed any information about new account openings.

Basic payment accounts in Luxembourg are offered by several institutions, including Spuerkeess, BIL, Raiffeisen Bank, Post Finance, and BGL BNP Paribas. The changes happening at ING Bank highlight a significant shift in the banking landscape in Luxembourg, particularly impacting customers with straightforward banking needs.
