Meta fined 102 million dollars for GDPR violations over password storage

Meta Platforms Ireland Limited has been fined €91 million by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) for violating the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The company stored user passwords in plaintext on internal systems, which was disclosed by Meta in 2019. The DPC's decision was based on a draft ruling from other supervisory authorities, as required by Article 60 of the GDPR.

The fine addresses violations of Articles 5, 32, and 33 of the regulation, indicating concerns about data protection practices at the social media giant. This enforcement action highlights the ongoing scrutiny of tech companies' compliance with strict data privacy laws in the EU.
