retailers explore electronic threads to combat rising shoplifting incidents

Retailers are looking for new ways to address the issue of shoplifting, which resulted in an estimated $73 billion in losses for U.S. merchants in 2022, according to the National Retail Federation.

Traditional methods such as increased security personnel, surveillance cameras, and locking up merchandise have proven to be insufficient in preventing theft, which can come from both external and internal sources.

In the UK, store theft losses have doubled in 2023 to £3.3 billion ($4.3 billion), as reported by the British Retail Consortium.

To tackle these increasing challenges, some retailers are considering incorporating electronic threads into clothing, effectively turning garments into anti-theft devices that emit radio signals.

This innovative approach aims to improve security measures and reduce the financial impact of retail theft.
