Moldova, a small country that was once part of the Soviet Union, is moving closer to joining the European Union, which represents a shift away from Russian influence.
In a recent referendum held on October 20, the government that supports European integration reported a narrow approval for EU membership, with just over half of the voters in favor.
This development comes at a time of increased tensions with pro-Russian groups who want to maintain close ties with Moscow.
The referendum took place alongside a presidential election, during which Moldova accused Russia of trying to influence the outcome.
They claimed that around €100 million was used to disrupt the democratic process.
The U.S. State Department has supported these allegations, stating that Russia aimed to undermine Moldova's democracy.
In response, Russia has denied any interference and has asked for evidence to support the claims.
