Qualcomm has introduced an upgrade to its mobile phone chips, utilizing technology originally developed for its laptop chips to improve performance for generative AI tasks.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite chip has been redesigned to efficiently handle complex tasks like image and text generation. This announcement was made during Samsung's IFA 2024 presentation in Berlin, marking the first use of Qualcomm's custom computing technology, known as "Oryon," in mobile devices.

Qualcomm will also provide specialized software tools to support developers, going beyond the capabilities of Alphabet's Android operating system. Major industry players, including Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer, and Xiaomi, plan to incorporate the new chip into their upcoming devices, showcasing a strong collaboration to advance mobile AI capabilities.
