Global consumer spending trends show mixed signals across major economies

China's singles' consumer spending festival seems to have boosted retail sales in October, while industrial production figures showed some export strength despite early signs of foreign buying in anticipation of tariffs.

In Japan, consumer spending exceeded expectations, contributing to a positive third-quarter GDP, although export data remained negative and industrial production was weak.

The UK reported disappointing industrial production figures for October, mainly due to poor manufacturing performance. However, consumption and investment helped support third-quarter GDP, despite exports dragging down growth.

In the US, retail sales data suggests a resurgence in consumer spending, reflecting improved living standards, although concerns about upcoming trade taxes may be impacting buyer behavior. Import and export price data are forthcoming, which will be significant as trade taxes are implemented, directly affecting US consumers.
