Swiss health insurance premium hikes hinder disposable income growth in 2024

The projected increase in health insurance premiums in Switzerland is expected to have a negative impact on income growth this year. The Federal Statistical Office estimates that this will result in a dampening effect of 0.5 percentage points on average disposable income.

The Health Insurance Premium Index is set to rise by 5.9% for the 2024 premium year, reaching a total of 213.9 points. This increase reflects the overall trend in both basic and supplementary insurance premiums. Basic insurance premiums for 2024 are expected to increase by 8.1% compared to the previous year, reaching an index level of 255.9 points. This increase represents the average premium development for the entire insured population.

On the other hand, premiums for supplementary insurance are predicted to decrease by 1.1%, with general supplementary hospital insurance premiums dropping by 5.7%. Looking ahead to 2025, the Federal Office of Public Health forecasts an average increase of 6% in basic insurance premiums, indicating continued financial pressure on households.
