Swiss rental prices see slight increase with notable regional variations

In September, rental prices in Switzerland saw a slight increase, with the overall index rising by 0.2 points to 128.1. Year-on-year, rents have surged by 3.9 percent across the country, reflecting a diverse trend among cantons.

The canton of Schwyz experienced the largest monthly rise at 3.1 percent, followed by Uri at 1.3 percent, and both Fribourg and Basel-Stadt at 1.0 percent each. On the other hand, rents decreased in Schaffhausen (-1.4 percent), Graubünden (-1.0 percent), and Valais (-0.7 percent).

Schwyz leads on an annual basis with an 11.4 percent increase, closely followed by Zug at 11.1 percent, with all cantons reporting year-on-year rent increases. In urban areas, Basel had the highest monthly rent increase at 1.1 percent, while Lausanne experienced a decline of 0.5 percent. Notably, Lucerne and Zurich reported significant year-on-year increases of 8.2 percent and 6.8 percent, respectively, indicating a strong rental market in these key cities.
