CNG vehicle sales surge as consumer preferences shift towards gas-fired options

CNG vehicle sales in India have experienced a significant increase of almost 50% in the first nine months of 2024, with a total of 550,812 units sold. This surge in sales can be attributed to a shift in consumer preference towards gas-fired vehicles.

The growth in CNG vehicle adoption can be attributed to several factors, including lower ownership costs, improved performance, and an expanding network of gas dispensing stations. The number of gas dispensing stations in India currently exceeds 7,000 and is expected to reach 17,500 by 2030.

Over the past five years, there has been a significant increase in CNG adoption in sedans, with the percentage rising from 10.8% to 41.5%. This change in consumer behavior indicates a notable shift in the automotive industry. Additionally, the number of CNG variants in the passenger vehicle market has increased from 65 to 97, while the share of petrol variants has decreased from 65% in FY19 to 61% in the first half of FY25. This trend highlights the growing presence of CNG vehicles in the market as manufacturers strive to strengthen their position in this segment.
