Roam and energica launch solar powered hubs to boost electric motorcycle adoption

The Roam Air motorcycle recently completed a 6,000-kilometer solar-powered journey from Nairobi, Kenya, to Stellenbosch, South Africa. This expedition, which took place from September 29 to October 16, 2024, showcased the potential of sustainable electric mobility in Africa.

Collaboration for Sustainable Mobility

The initiative was a collaboration between Roam and Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Engineering, with support from partners such as SANEDI and Scatec. The journey tested the motorcycle's capabilities and highlighted Kenya's leadership in clean mobility solutions.

Solar-Powered Journey

The Roam Air traveled through several countries, including Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and Botswana, before reaching its final destination. It demonstrated its solar recharging capabilities and the effectiveness of its portable dual battery system. The motorcycle covered an impressive 1,000 kilometers in under 18 hours on the final leg of the trip, proving its reliability and efficiency.

Electric Vehicle Sector in Kenya

The electric vehicle sector in Kenya, particularly in the motorcycle segment, is experiencing a surge of interest. With over 2.1 million motorcycles currently in operation, there is immense potential for electrification. Transitioning to electric motorcycles could bring efficiencies to the energy system, reduce fossil fuel imports, and generate additional revenue for the country's utility company.

Opportunity for Cost Savings

Kenya's renewable-powered electricity grid offers an opportunity to capitalize on excess capacity during off-peak hours. Switching to electric motorcycles could result in significant cost savings for riders compared to petrol. If the entire motorcycle fleet transitioned to electric, the utility company could see a substantial increase in revenue from overnight charging, reducing the financial burden of fuel imports.

Expanding Infrastructure for Electric Mobility

To support the transition to electric motorcycles, a robust battery charging and swapping network is essential. Roam is working to expand its infrastructure by establishing ten new solar-powered Roam Hubs in Nairobi, with funding from ENERGICA. These hubs will provide affordable battery rentals, optimized charging solutions, and efficient after-sales services for electric motorcycle riders. The goal is to enhance the accessibility of electric mobility in urban areas.

Driving Sustainable Development

The successful completion of the Roam Air's solar-powered journey and the efforts to expand electric mobility in Kenya demonstrate the continent's potential to lead in sustainable transport solutions. Collaboration between Roam and academic institutions like Stellenbosch University highlights the importance of innovation and research in addressing transportation challenges in Africa. Electric mobility not only offers environmental benefits but also economic opportunities for local communities.

Promoting Sustainable Travel

The journey also showcased Africa's natural beauty, emphasizing the potential for eco-tourism and sustainable travel. The warm reception from local communities during the journey reflects a growing enthusiasm for homegrown electric mobility solutions, signaling a shift in public perception and acceptance of sustainable technologies.

Building a Sustainable Future

As the electric vehicle market evolves, infrastructure development, community engagement, and innovative partnerships will be crucial in driving the transition to a more sustainable future. The Roam Air's journey serves as a symbol of what can be achieved through collaboration, resilience, and a commitment to clean energy solutions.
