The European Union is currently assessing the inclusion of a carbon offsets program supervised by the United Nations in its upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
This mechanism, which is expected to be fully operational by 2026, will impose a price on emissions associated with imported goods.
As part of this evaluation, the EU is considering whether fees paid in the country of origin can be taken into account in the carbon pricing, as long as these fees are part of mandatory initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
This step is part of the EU's broader strategy to tackle climate change and ensure that imported products meet strict environmental standards.
