Credit Suisse Faces Scrutiny Over Employee Use of Unauthorized Messaging Apps

Regulators are currently investigating the use of WhatsApp by employees at Credit Suisse. The focus of the investigation is on the transmission of information that could impact prices.

This investigation comes after a series of compliance issues at the bank, including a 2017 incident where an investment banker was fined for sharing confidential client information through the messaging app. This incident highlighted a lack of proper due diligence.

In September 2022, US authorities imposed a $200 million fine on Credit Suisse for not adequately monitoring employee communications on unauthorized messaging platforms. The bank was also required to take steps to prevent future violations, as outlined in its 2022 annual report. UBS also faced similar penalties for similar infractions, which underscores the ongoing concerns about communication practices within major financial institutions.
