Zurich referendum seeks to block UBS high-rise in Altstetten area

The Young Greens in Zurich are organizing a referendum against the proposed construction of a 108-meter high-rise UBS tower in Altstetten.

Critics argue that the project's environmental impact is a cause for concern, as they view it as "spectacle architecture" rather than an "ecological showcase project."

The site, referred to as "VZA1," is located next to Altstetten station, bordered by Max-Högger-Strasse and Aargauerstrasse, and is approximately the size of a football pitch.

Currently, the existing commercial building on the site needs renovation, which would make way for the new high-rise. The design of the high-rise incorporates wooden elements, solar panels, and green facades.

The debate surrounding the balance between urban development and ecological sustainability in Zurich is intensifying as the referendum date of November 24 approaches.
