telecom operators call for reduction of license fees to boost services

Indian telecom operators, such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, are urging the government to eliminate or significantly reduce the license fee associated with the Universal Service Obligation (USO).

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has proposed lowering this fee from 8 percent of Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) to approximately 0.5-1 percent. The operators argue that reducing these fees would enable them to reinvest revenues into network upgrades and expansion, ultimately improving service quality for consumers.

This move is considered crucial for promoting digital inclusion, especially in remote areas, and enhancing the overall quality of life for the public. COAI represents major industry players, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea.
