South Africa is requesting $2.6 billion in climate finance while intending to extend the operation of several coal-fired power plants beyond the previously agreed upon timeline.
The country aims to reduce emissions from its fleet of 14 plants operated by Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd., despite making changes to a 2022 agreement that originally called for the closure of the Grootvlei, Hendrina, and Camden plants starting next year.
The revised plan has been submitted to the Climate Investment Funds, which is affiliated with the World Bank, as part of South Africa's commitment to reducing emissions. The government has indicated that the closure of the three facilities will be delayed, reflecting a change in strategy as it navigates the challenges of transitioning away from coal while seeking international financial support.
