India faces challenge of unsold renewable energy amid high demand

India is currently facing a significant challenge with around 30 GW of renewable energy projects that do not have buyers. This issue has been highlighted by industry experts and has been further emphasized by the indictment of Gautam Adani by the US Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) alone holds approximately 9 GW of this unsold capacity, which raises concerns about the effectiveness of current energy policies. To address the surplus of unsold energy and meet the growing power demand, the Indian government has mandated state-owned power companies, including SECI, NTPC, NHPC, and SJVN, to collectively bid for 50 GW of renewable projects annually until FY28. This initiative is part of India's ambitious goal to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power generation capacity by 2030.

Industry experts stress the urgent need for stricter enforcement of Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) norms by state distribution companies (discoms) to address the ongoing mismatch between supply and demand in the renewable energy sector.
