Mahindra has recently introduced two new electric SUVs, the BE 6E and XEV 9E, which are priced at Rs 18.9 lakh and Rs 21.9 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. These models come with battery packs of 59 kWh and 79 kWh, and they claim to have a range of over 500 km per charge.
In an effort to compete with Tata Motors, the current leader in the Indian electric vehicle market, Mahindra aims to achieve 30% of its total Passenger Vehicle sales from battery-driven SUVs by 2027. Tata Motors currently holds a dominant position in the market, accounting for approximately 65% of total EV sales in India. They have popular electric models such as the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Nexon EV, and Currv EV. According to Vahan data, Tata registered 50,762 out of 79,875 EVs sold this year. However, Tata Motors has faced challenges in EV sales due to the expiration of certain subsidies linked to the PM E-Drive Policy, as mentioned by a senior company official.
Overall, the Indian electric vehicle market is witnessing intense competition between Mahindra and Tata Motors. While Tata Motors currently holds the majority market share, Mahindra is making significant efforts to capture a larger portion of the market with its new electric SUV models. The competition between these two companies is expected to drive innovation and further advancements in the electric vehicle industry in India.
