BCN has taken significant measures to enhance the security of its ATM network in response to an increase in attacks on ATMs, particularly in regions close to the French border. The bank has invested a substantial amount of money to ensure the safety and functionality of its machines, which have recently been reactivated after a thorough security reassessment.
This initiative follows a series of ATM shutdowns that began in May to address vulnerabilities exploited by criminals. The urgent need for enhanced protective measures was highlighted by an explosive attack on an ATM in La Brévine on May 27. As a result of a risk assessment, certain machines, including the one in La Brévine, have not been reinstated due to the lack of adequate risk-reducing solutions. The bank has also chosen to keep the ATM in Les Verrières offline following vandalism, indicating a cautious approach to reintroducing services in high-risk areas.
BCN has implemented site-specific security measures tailored to the unique risks associated with each ATM location. For example, ATMs in front of buildings in Saint-Aubin have been fortified with metal curtains to provide additional protection against potential attacks. In Fleurier, the bank has decided to relocate ATMs inside the branch to minimize exposure to external threats. However, not all locations have been deemed secure enough to resume operations. Further work is required in Couvet before the ATMs can be brought back into service, demonstrating the bank's commitment to ensuring stringent safety standards are met. Metal curtains have been installed at ATMs in the Cortaillod and Boudry shopping centers to enhance their security profile. These proactive measures taken by BCN demonstrate a comprehensive strategy to safeguard its assets and customers in an increasingly volatile environment.
In addition to enhancing security at certain locations, BCN has made the decision to permanently remove several ATMs. The machines at Les Eplatures in La Chaux-de-Fonds, as well as those at the Landeron and Areuse centers, have been taken out of service. This decision is based on a strategic assessment of the risk versus reward associated with maintaining these ATMs in areas where security cannot be sufficiently guaranteed. Additional protective measures, such as the installation of iron curtains, have been implemented at various "extramural" sites in Neuchâtel, including Fun'ambule, Pharmacie de Monruz, and Rue de l'Hôpital. The bank has also announced the removal of ATMs at the Place de la Gare in Neuchâtel, Cressier, and Hauterive, citing the availability of nearby alternatives as the reason for this action. These decisions highlight BCN's proactive approach to addressing security concerns while ensuring uninterrupted customer access to banking services.
BCN operates a total of 47 ATMs, and while significant changes have been made to certain locations, operations at other sites remain unaffected. The measures taken by BCN not only respond to immediate threats but also demonstrate a broader commitment to maintaining the integrity and safety of its banking infrastructure in the face of evolving challenges.
