Fifteen individuals, including a former deputy trade minister and an ex-provincial party chief, are currently on trial for bribery charges related to Xuyen Viet Oil in Ho Chi Minh City. The trial is part of a larger effort to combat corruption in Vietnam.
Mai Thi Hong Hanh, the former director and chairwoman of Xuyen Viet Oil, is accused of violating management regulations and misusing state assets, resulting in a financial loss of 1.46 trillion dong (approximately $57.5 million). Hanh and her associates allegedly offered bribes totaling $1.3 million to government officials in order to overlook violations related to the petroleum price stabilization fund and to gain favorable treatment in licensing and procurement processes.
