Arunachal Pradesh is on track to become a major hub for hydropower in India, with projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore in the works. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to two significant hydropower projects totaling 426 MW, with an investment of Rs 3,689 crore.
These projects include the Tato-I Hydro Electric Project, which has a capacity of 186 MW and is valued at Rs 1,750 crore, and the Heo Hydro Electric Project, which has a capacity of 240 MW and is worth Rs 1,939 crore. Both projects are located in the Shi Yomi district.
The goal is to have 12,500 MW of hydropower projects up and running within the next two years, with the help of central public sector undertakings like NHPC, NEEPCO, THDC, and SJVN. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein of Arunachal Pradesh has announced that five projects are expected to begin next year, with three more projects planned for 2026 and 2027. This is a significant step towards harnessing the state's hydropower potential, which is estimated to be around 1,45,320 MW for projects exceeding 25 MW capacity.
