French healthtech sector thrives with increased venture capital funding in 2022

In 2022, the French healthtech sector showed resilience by raising €2.6 billion, a 14% increase from the previous year, despite a decrease in the number of deals.

Venture capital financing played a significant role, with €1.8 billion raised, including 16 transactions exceeding €30 million, particularly in e-health, biotech, and medtech.

However, the market capitalization of French healthtech companies experienced a significant decline of 45% in 2022, dropping from €10.9 billion to €6.05 billion.

In terms of IPOs, companies raised €198 million, with six corporate IPOs and two for healthcare financing firms, although this amount is lower than venture capital funding.

Refinancing activity in the market saw a slight decrease in the number of transactions, down to 22 from 29 in 2021, but the amounts raised increased by 14%.

The nature of refinancing operations has changed, with larger transactions being executed more quickly, while the reliance on debt financing remained stable, although there was a shift in the types of financing used.
